PRINTMAKING

AaronPrintmaking

Students will learn the medium of linoleum block printing and a monotype technique.

Linocut is a graphic relief printmaking technique in which a block of linoleum is carved by hand in order to produce a matrix that can be used for multiple prints. Students will learn how to prepare and transfer an image onto a block of linoleum, how to carve the block using basic "Speedball" carving tools and how to print their matrix. The final edition of original prints will be produced. Students will learn how to properly ink the block and print by hand using a brayer and a barren, how to sign and number prints, as well as some easy cleanup techniques.

A monotype, often called a painters print, is created when an image is painted onto smooth surface, such as a plexiglass, then transferred onto printmaking paper. The image may consist of a single transfer or a buildup of multiple layers.

Students will also work collaboratively to create an "Exquisite Corpse" print, as well as individually on images that reflect personal themes and aesthetics.
